NORMAN
R. (ROD) STONE

Norman R. (Rod) Stone was born on July 31st, 1947, in
Selma, Alabama to Thomas R. and Sylvia A. Stone. He is the oldest
of 4 children. He attended Selma public schools and graduated
from A.G. Parrish High School in June of 1965.
After working for Southern Railway after graduation, Rod joined
the United States Navy in September of 1965. After boot camp in
San Diego, California, he attended Engineman class “A” school in
Great Lakes, Illinois, where he finished 1st in his
class. After volunteering for a yet to be disclosed duty, he
attended Boat School for River Patrol Boats (PBR) in Vallejo,
California, as well as Coronado Phib Base. He took SERE training
in California and Washington and jungle training in the
Philippines. Upon completion, it was off to Vietnam in May, 1966,
where he was attached to River Patrol Section 531, Mytho, Vietnam.
He served on PBR 98 as a forward gunner and engineman and PBR 109
as a boat captain after making Engineman 3rd Class. He
served on 199 combat missions on the Mytho and Mekong rivers and
canals.
His civilian career includes graduating from Wallace Community
College, with a B.S. in business administration. He worked as a
diesel mechanic at Buck’s Garage from 1972-1976. He then went to
Globe Metallurgical in the Maintenance Department. He still works
for Globe as a Purchasing Manager and Maintenance Manager.
To qualify for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Rod
was awarded 2 Bronze Stars w/combat “V”, Purple Heart, 2
Presidential citations, Navy Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon,
National Defense Ribbon, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign
Ribbons among other citations and awards, both domestic and
foreign. After his Navy career, Stone received an Honorable
Discharge in 1972.

Rod joined the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 3016 in Selma, Alabama in 1994. He became
a life member in 1995. |
He has served in many Post, District and Department offices
including; Post Jr. Vice (2 years), Post Sr. Vice, Post Commander (3 times),
Post Quartermaster (3 years), District Quartermaster (4 years),
District Youth Activities chairman (5 years).

Rod is presently serving as Jr. Vice Commander, Selma Post 3016.
Rod has been married to Patsy for 37 years and they reside in
Selma, Alabama. They have 2 sons, (Russ and Tim) and 3
grandchildren. Russ is a Manager at Briggs and Stratton in
Auburn, Alabama. Tim, who is currently serving in the United
States Navy on the USS Taylor has recently become a Life Member of
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3016, Selma, Alabama.
